2021.10.21 16:02 huzurarayan Did the 'Investiture Controversy' not begin over investiture?
In her article "The Crisis in the Investiture Crisis Narrative" (2009), Maureen Miller claims that the famous incident at Canossa in 1077, when Emperor Henry IV had to beg for forgiveness from Pope Gregory VII, actually had nothing to do with investiture, because no ban on lay investiture was enacted until the following year. She puts this in frank terms: "we now know that no ban on investiture brought Henry and Gregory to Canossa." Given that the article is 12 years old, I'm wondering what the state of the field is now: how do modern historians understand the origins of the 'Investiture Controversy' and the role of the issue of lay investiture within it? If investiture didn't bring Henry to Canossa, what did?

2021.10.21 16:02 youni89 Trying to decide which era/timeperiod to focus this hobby on
I'm new to coin collecting and currently I'm dabbling into many different time periods from ancient Greece to modern U.S dollars, but I want to start finding some sort of a focus so I can have more depth in my collection. Currently reading about Napoleon I but he had a relatively short career as Consul/Emperor so I don't know if it'll be something I'll be able to spend too much time one with coins.
Which eras are you guys interested in and what are some focuses for your own collections?

2021.10.21 16:02 Thai-Reidj Saying the 90s was better than modern times is somewhat of an entitled thing to say
Now first off 2020s have been shit so far. When I say modern times I mean generally, not the last 2 years
Second of all, I love the 90s, I was born in the 2000s but there are a lot of things about the 90s that I wouldn't mind in modern society, especially the music.
3rd There are definitely a lot of things that were better (especially when dealing with economics). The cost of living was low, politicians were a bit more genuine, many economies grew, etc.
But then you have a lot of bad. Crime was extremely high in many countries compared to now. There was also a lot more war and social unrest (social unrest now is nothing compared to before). Teen pregnancy was high as fuck, and because of the 'sex bad' which was still somewhat prevalent, sex related crimes were much worse. Poverty in many countries was much higher than it is now. Mental health issues were extremely stigmatized, gays were treated like shit. All the pedo shit that people blame on the internet was much worse.
Then you have cancel culture. Many people like to say "this generation is so soft" but there have always been soft people. Add that to the fact that you could get cancelled for much smaller things that you could now (I mean things as small as cursing in front of a teen was a big deal to some people).
The fact is the only reason you hear more about certain things now is thanks to the internet, and if anything, that's a good thing because it makes it much easier to address things that most people didn't know about due to lack of knowledge.
I know that some things in developed countries got worse, but for most people life is much better now

2021.10.21 16:02 Shoong Square Stored Five of my Credit Cards Without Telling Me
I have had my credit card stolen multiple times this year. Im very secure about using my credit card. I use the capital one app to make digital copies of my card when shopping online. I also worked for Visa for four years so I know all about how the industry works.
So after my card got stolen for the third time I had to figure out what I was doing wrong. I noticed that the one thing different about my card that got stolen compared to my cards that didn’t was that I used the stolen card at Square merchants.
For those who don’t know, Square is a merchant point of sale system aka the thing you swipe/tap/insert your card into.
So APPARENTLY when you use a square POS, if you sign up for the electronic receipt, you are a “Square Pay” member now. This means your credit card info is stored in Square’s system, AND shared with the merchant.
The merchant can even remotely charge your card without your permission. This is what I believe has happened to me multiple times.
My question is, how is it legal for Square to sneakily store my credit card info like this AND give merchants permission to CHARGE MY CARD without giving my explicit notice?
I know its not catastrophic personal injury but Tom is the best lawyer around and I trust him.
